Seminars

The department has been convening national level and state level symposiums / workshops on topics of current issues relevant to the profession.  The following are the topics:

Yukta ‘97

Theme: A national level workshop focusing on Vedic architecture – Vaastu Shastra.  The three day workshop was presented on the basis of the research work based on Geo-bio energy studies.
Experts: A team of experts including Dr. Prabhat Kumar Poddar, Chairman, Ahash Education & Research Trust, Pondicherry, Prof. H.D. Chayya, H.O.D, Conservation, SPA, New Delhi, Ar. Kerry Preas, Australia.










Drishya ’98

Theme: A convention of Zonal Nasa having its theme as ‘A search for identity’.  Students from the south zone participated in full strength on all the three days.  The convention was inaugurated by the Council President, Ar. P.R. Mehta & Ar. Rajagopalan, President IIA was the chief guest.
Experts: Ar. D. Ramakrishna Rao, Ar. Srivatsan, & Er. Benny Kuria Kose, Ar. Elias Koshi & Ar. Narayana Rao spoke on the theme topic.







Maarg ‘99

Theme: A state level seminar with focus on sustainable development.  It dealt with issues of sustaining & development of craftsmanship in the construction industry.  Focus was on the construction methodologies and use of sustainable building materials.
Experts: The experts were from ‘ Build Collective’, represented by Ar. Sudhir, Ar.Vishnupriya & Ar. Nizar.A.Sathar. 



Arcon 2000

Theme: This two day state level symposium deliberated upon the relevance and details of Construction Management.  The issue of Sustainable Development which was deliberated during the Maarg seminar was further developed in detail.  The focus of the symposium was to create a conductive institute – industry interaction.

Experts: The construction management team had experts from ECC – L&T and other related institutions.  The Sustainable Development issue was handled by Mr. G. Dattari, Consultant, Sustainable Chennai Project, UNCHS along with his team.

Parampara ‘01

Theme: The focus of paramapara 2001 was on “conservation” – an emerging area in architecture.  With the large inheritance of heritage buildings in our country and recognition of the central & state Governments on Tourism development the field of conservation has been getting into prominence. Hence in this context the department shows to emphasize on the issue of conservation in architecture to bring the awareness of the same.
Experts: The symposium was addressed by Dr. Mathews, Heritage conservation in earthquake prone areas, Ar. Kalpana, techniques and materials employed in conservation, Dr. Srivatsan, case studies on conservation.

Yugam ‘02

Theme: The 45th Annual Convention was held in our campus from 26th to 29th December 2002.  The Convention was titled “Yugam” – A desire to recollect, with the theme as conservation.

Experts:  Mr. S. Muthiah, Mr. G. Dattatri, Mr. Benny Kuriakose, Ar. Vikas Dilawari, Ar. Balkrishnan, Mr.Poddar, Ar. Nalini Thakur, Ar. Sathyaprakash, Ar. Nimesh Patel, Mr. Elango were some of the resource persons who addressed various sub themes of conservation  Ar. Satprem, Ar. Anupama Kundoo along with artisans from Dakshin Chitra conducted workshops during the convention.


Mondial 04

Theme: On the theme of Globalization , a two day regional convention was held on 11th & 12th Feb 2004 .

Experts: The resource persons who delivered lectures were - Ar. Suresh Kuppuswamy. Professor, School of Architecture & Planning, Chennai, Ar. Mahesh, Visiting faculty, School of architecture & Planning, Chennai,
Ar.Venkatesh L,  Practicing Architect, C. N. Narayana Rao, Chennai.
Ar. Cheralathan & Ar. Jothiram presented their works.





Vergal 05

Theme:  To look at the branches on which the Architectural profession takes its strength, the symposium in 2005 titled “Vergal”   ( meaning Roots in Tamil ) held on 17th & 18th March looked at  the influences & contributions of Painting, Artistry, Lighting, Animation in Architecture.

Experts: Trotsky Marudhu Art Director & Illustrator spoke on the interdependence of various profession for enrichment.  Ms. Fowzia Fathima, Cinematographer spoke on how Architecture & lighting affects cinematography. Ar.A.Raghuram dealt on how the training imparted in architectural education can be utilized on the Animation & Modeling field, the scope for the same. Ar. Sai Shankar discussed the importance of conceptual designs in Architecture and presented a few of his works. 









NATURE -Inspirations for design -October 2006

Theme:  "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world" JOHN MUIR. The world of nature is absolutely diverse, mobile, mutable and is surprisingly miscellaneous. It demonstrates to us a fancy carnival of a diversification and originality of creative combinations. In tact, nature turns out to be an enormous wellspring of ideas. Even everyday devices may benefit from nature-inspired improvements.Of all the artists that we know, nature is by far the most colorful. Nature's bright colors and exciting patterns have been copied by artists since the days of the cave dwellers.
The workshop aims to expose the participants to some of the immense ways nature has inspired artists, architects, designers, scientists and researchers to come up with an endless variety of patterns, forms, materials and methods to better our lives. It aims to invigorate the thinking process with the endless inspirations from nature. letting nature be great teacher.
 The Seminar was conducted in association with IIA Tamilnadu Chapter

URBAN CONTEMPORARY ISSUES - 18th – 20th Feb 2007

A National Seminar on “Urban Contemporary Issues” was held at our University from 18th – 20th February 2007.
Theme: Over the last three decades, Urbanization has shown unprecedented rates of growth, devastating the physical form of our cities which have been unable to deal with the swelling numbers. While this compression of people in a limited space symbolizes optimism and is characterized by many positive attributes, it has spelt doom for the quality of urban life in our cities.The Conference aims at interdisciplinary approach to explore spatial, demographic, political, social, physical, economic and ecological aspects of contemporary urban life.
The objective of this seminar is to help students improve their analytical skills to better understand contemporary urban issues, the urban environment and government policy and how these shape our understanding of urban conditions and experiences. Various theories of   relations between such fragments and their significance as enclaves were discussed.

WORLD HABITAT DAY CELEBRATIONS - 2007

Department of Architecture of Sathyabama University, Chennai in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Town Planners Association, TN Chapter and UN HABITAT celebrated the World Habitat Day at Sathyabama University on 10th October 2007.
The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. Our Honorable Directors Thiru Marie Johnson and Mariazeena Johnson were kind enough to support the happening of this occasion. Apart from the host college students, there were fifty students from various city colleges who participated in the workshop followed by the “on the spot competitions” on the theme.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT  Training Programme - 8th-10th Oct 2007

A certified Project Management Training Programme was organized jointly with North American Business Institute (NABI) for PG students.
Mr. Partheepan Director NABI held technical sessions for three days. The topics covered include SMART goals, Work Breakdown Structure, Activity Crashing, Creating WBS, MS PROJECT etc.

ECHDEM 2007 – 28th – 30th Nov 2007

“ECHDEM 2007”, is an International Conference and Exhibition on “Emerging Challenges in Design and Manufacturing Technologies”, Organized during 28th to 30th November 2007 at Sathyabama University, Chennai. The Conference is jointly organized by Sathyabama University, Chennai and Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, DRDO, Government of India, Chennai.

Space systems across the globe are playing significant role in various developmental efforts benefiting the humanity. Having demonstrated its potentials for improving the life on Earth, the international space community is currently engaged in many exciting missions including the planetary exploration. Technology developments to achieve cost effective space transportation system and efficient use of space assets for the benefit of society and mankind are attracting a lot of attention in recent time. Globally there have also been many initiatives from the academic community towards exploiting the potentials of space science, technology and applications including development of space systems themselves. WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY


A two workshop was inaugurated on the world environmental day on 15th july,2010 .The celebrations were based on the theme “MANY SPECIES, ONE PLANET, ONE FUTURE –BIODIVERSITY, ECCOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT AND THE GREEN ECONOMY “. THE PROGRAMME  was conducted by the Department of Architecture in association with Institute of Town Planners , India- Tamil Nadu Regional Chapter (ITPI-TNRC) and the Indian Insitituteof Arcitects  -Tamil Nadu chapter. The two day workshop comprised of Technical presentation by Experts , Urban Environment Exhibition and Competitions for students. A souvenir was also released to mark the event.

Green architecture for residential building was a  one day  seminar which focused on Sustainable Architecture for Residential buildings on 29th September, 2010. the focus of the seminar was towards  smart and sustainable buildings. RSTS &CC -2010


An International Conference on Recent Advances In Space Technology Services &Climate Change (RSTS &CC-2010)  was hosted  from 13th -15th November, 2010. The event was marked as the first major Internationalconference on Climate Change in the southern part of India . The conference provided an avenue through an innovative , annual face – to – face interaction on the Climate Change among the members of this knowledge community which include academics, educators, administrators, policy makers, consultants, researchers and research students expressing insights on technology transfer to developing countries and to enhance the scope for cooperation on research and development.

As a part of conference schedule , a space bridge was arranged through which the pioneers on climate change addressed through video conferencing to the core group of attendees during the schedule .

ARCHESIS 2011


Council Of Architecture (COA) through its academic unit – National Institute Of Advanced Studies in Architecture (NIASA) is organizing an “AWARDS PROGRAMME FOR EXCELLENCE IN ARCHITECTURAL THESIS” for students who submitted their thesis, in the undergraduate courses, this academic year, from colleges of Architecture in India. This is an annual event conducted to identify the best thesis projects in India. The awards programme showcases the best architectural design concerns by becoming a public event. Stalwarts from the field of Architecture are involved in choosing the winners, in a public jury attended by the general public, including students and faculty from all regional Colleges of Architecture, eminent citizens and the media. The programme simultaneously acts as a public awareness event, to promote the subject of Architecture.

This year, the department of architecture , sathyabama University  proudly hosted the “Awards for Excellence in Architectural Thesis 2011”, “archesis 2011”, for the zone V, which was held on the 22nd , 23rd, and 24th September 2011.Along with this a technical session was held by Ar. Deepa Rani from the Energy Cell – L&T  on “Building Energy Analysis And Performance”

PUNARNAVA 2012

Punarnava- reinventing the past, 2012 was a 2 day seminar held on 3rd and 4th of July, 2012 which revolved on a wide range of topics related to Heritage and Conservation. The seminar focused on topics related to the preservation and conservation of historical sites, latest trends in conservation and revitalization of degraded sites and so on.

Leading experts from various service backgrounds made presentations on heritage and conservation and revoked the passion for the protection of the heritage among the audience.

  2. Thanks....Very Useful one..........We are leading Temple architect in tamilnadu and Construction Company using traditional Indian architecture. Also built Hindu temple design architecture without steel reinforcement with natural stone for Vastu shastra architecture in Chennai.
